Product and Service Preview
Laser Processing Services
Laser processing capabilities are offered
to medical device OEMs by a contract
manufacturer equipped to perform precision
laser machining, cutting, drilling, and welding
of stainless steel, titanium, platinum,
borosilicate glass, quartz, ceramics, and
silicone. Expanded capabilities for medical
tube cutting allow the service provider to
produce smaller features and wield the laser
with greater precision. The company can
manufacture vascular stents, vascular closures
and connectors, and catheter-based deployment
components from precision-laser-cut nitinol,
stainless steels, and cobalt chromium alloys.
Capable of handling projects ranging from
prototypes to high-volume production, the ISO
9001:2008–certified manufacturer offers a
metallurgical laboratory, R&D, and engineering
resources.

Tool-Grinding Machines
Precision CNC tool-grinding
machines manufactured by a
Swiss-based company are suited
for grinding medical instruments
for cranial, dental, and surgical
applications. GrindSmart machines

Planetary Gearhead
A low-noise planetary gearhead is a patented coaxial drive that combines worm and planetary
gearing technologies. Measuring 32 mm diam and offering a torque of 6. 5 N•m and speeds
to 8000 rpm, the Koaxdrive KD 32 features a worm-form motor pinion that drives
three offset planetary wheels that interlock with an internal gear that
has straight-cut teeth. The plastic planetary wheels can be
largely credited with minimizing noise levels, though
the distinctive torque conversion makes operation
of the drive quiet even with high loads. The
modular drive can be assembled with a variety
of the manufacturer’s motors. These low-noise
motor-drive combinations are suited for such
applications as medical hand tools and
instruments that are used principally
on or near patients.

allows nonstandard or nonround tools
such as inserts to be autoloaded and
ground; an interchangeable standard
magazine loader and special loader
for tools up to 400 mm long; a
compact six-axis layout designed to
minimize travel distances between
grinding wheels and operations;
and software for grinding surgical
specialty tools. The machines exhibit
virtually no tool runout and provide
high-quality edges and surface finishes
owing to a hydrostatic and linear
motor–driven machine axis system. A
dressing station is optionally available
for dressing or regenerating abrasive
or superabrasive wheels. Other system
features include integrated gap
control technology and a tool wizard
with a large database of end mills,
drills, and step drills.

Springs
A company offers a series of small, standard-sized wave
springs. The Crest-to-Crest springs enable OEMs to reduce
the size of their assembly by up to 50% while maintaining
the same amount of force and
deflection as a regular coiled
spring, according to the company.
The springs are available in
dimensions from ¼ to 2 in. More
than 4000 standard wave springs
in Type 17-7 stainless steel or
carbon steel are available.

PVC Extension Lines
A company offers bonded PVC
extension lines available in braided
and nonbraided styles. The product
has a bonded polycarbonate female
luer-lock inlet and either a rotating-or fixed-male luer outlet. Tubing
is offered with varying inner and
outer dimensions, pressure ratings
from 100 to 1200 psi, and lengths
from 6 to 48 in. Other available
extension line types include pressure
monitoring, coiled, and light sensitive.
Various connector options are
available to suit customers’ designs.
