Moisture-Content
Titration
A service provider offers titration to
determine the water content of gases,
liquids, and solids, including polymers.
Since molding wet polymers can
cause degradation, moisture content
information can be important when
processing hygroscopic (
water-absorbing) polymers such as nylon.
When trying to verify the moisture
content of a product or compound,
Booth 1661
Karl Fischer titration offers accuracy
and precision because it determines
water content independently of other
volatiles. Based on the material being
analyzed, this titration technique
involves heating samples down to
0.05 g in an oven for a specific
period of time at a predetermined
temperature. The water in the
sample is vaporized and carried
into a reaction vessel containing
a methanolic solution. The water
molecules are then dissolved in the
methanol and titrated to an end
point using a Karl Fischer reagent to
measure the water content ranging
from 10–4 to 100%.
